IN THE moonlight coming through the blue curtains, Trent watched Adam sleep. Deep in slumber he looked just like anyone else. A lock of red hair threatened to drop down into his eyes. There was just enough light to see the freckles that covered Adam’s nose and spread across his checks. There was a softness there that pulled at Trent’s need to protect him. He knew then he’d do anything he needed to in order to keep Adam safe, even if what he was being kept safe from was his own homophobic family.

He ran his hand carefully over Adam’s chest, liking the way the soft red hair there tickled his fingers. It felt different to touch Adam in a quiet moment that had nothing to do with sex.

Adam opened his eyes and stared at Trent. “Is something wrong?” he asked groggily.

“No.” Trent stopped petting and pressed his hand in the center of Adam’s chest. “I woke up and wanted to feel you.”

Smiling at Trent, Adam took hold of his hand and brought it up to his lips for a soft kiss. “I was dreaming of you. You were riding a white horse and coming to rescue me.” Adam shook his head. “I don’t even know if you can ride a horse. Although it’s not that hard. Mother used to take me riding out east of Denver when I was little. I always connected with animals more than I did people.”

Trent pressed his fingers against Adam’s lips. “It’s not silly. I think it’s really sweet. I do know how to ride. Let’s hope I never have to rescue you. It would be in my Jeep, not on a white horse. The Jeep can go almost anywhere a horse can.”

“Good. Horses can be temperamental.” Adam leaned up and kissed Trent. “Since we’re both awake, do you want to have sex again? It feels great both ways to me. We can do whatever you’d like.”

Unable to suppress his laugh, Trent hugged Adam tightly. “Have I created a sex fiend?”

Adam cocked his head for a second. “Maybe.” Then he kissed Trent again.

Nearly an hour later, Adam’s light snore, more like a cat’s purr, lulled Trent to sleep. His dreams were full of a red-haired prince locked in a tower and white horses that refused to go where he so desperately wanted them to.
